Precision Metal Cutting for Military and Defence Applications
Military and defence manufacturing is rigorous, demanding precision, consistency, and dependable production capacity. For over 40 years, The Laser Cutting Co. has delivered laser cutting and metal profiling services for a variety of manufacturers and engineering businesses serving the defence sector.
With our experience in advanced laser profiling and metal processing, we can handle everything from intricate sheet metal components to large structural sections, tubes, and fabrication-ready parts. Our capabilities support a wide range of projects, ranging from prototypes and low-volume requirements to highly intricate designs.
Equipped with 10 laser cutting machines operating 24 hours a day, we have the capacity to manage projects of varying sizes while ensuring short lead times and consistent output. Our Sheffield facility combines laser cutting with waterjet cutting, bending, welding, flow drilling, tapping and other profiling services, helping our customers reduce the number of suppliers involved in their manufacturing process.
Why Work with the Laser Cutting Co.?
Our laser cutting capabilities mean we can process ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, copper, Hardox steel and other specialist alloys.
We can profile sheets up to 2000mm x 4000mm and 50mm thick, with our sister site, Charles Day Steels, handling larger sheets up to 6510mm x 2600mm. For structural components, our 10kW laser processes sections with wall thicknesses up to 20mm, while our six-axis cutting allows for complex geometries, including 45-degree bevel cutting and weld preparation, with automated handling of materials up to 65kg per metre. We can also cut parts up to 12,200mm long and tubes with a 324mm outside diameter.
This combination of scale, accuracy and production capacity makes our metal profiling services suitable for a wide range of components used within complex engineering and defence supply chains.
Quality, Compliance & Traceability for
Military & Defence
The Laser Cutting Co.’s Quality Promise
For defence-related manufacturing, quality and documentation are incredibly important to remain compliant and maintain a high standard of quality. Our ISO 9001 quality management system supports controlled and consistent production, while BS EN 1090-1 certification up to EXC3 supports the manufacture of structural components where required.
Our experienced production team and in-house CAD capabilities provide further control over the manufacture of components, while our inspection and quality processes help ensure that parts are produced consistently against customer specifications.
Advantages of Laser Cutting for Military & Defence
Laser cutting provides the accuracy, repeatability and flexibility needed for military and defence sectors. Some of the key benefits include:
Precision & Repeatability
Laser cutting delivers accurate, repeatable results from prototypes to high-volume production. This helps ensure consistent component quality expected in sectors such as military and defence.
Quality Assurance & Traceability
We operate in line with ISO 9001 and BS EN 1090-1 up to EXC3, with material certification and documentation available where required. We uphold high levels of quality, compliance and traceability requirements across supply chains.
Complex Components
Advanced laser technology allows us to produce intricate profiles, complex geometries, bevels and weld preparations with a high degree of accuracy. Our six-axis cutting capabilities allow features to be incorporated directly into components.
Production Capacity
Our 24/7 production means that we can support both small- and large-scale production. Our operations provide responsive turnaround and consistent output, providing additional capacity for demanding production requirements.
Reduced Manufacturing Costs
Accurate profiling, efficient nesting and integrated features reduce material waste and the need for secondary machining or fabrication. Our smart design production optimises parts for greater downstream efficiency.
Manufacturing Support
Our capabilities extend beyond laser cutting to provide waterjet cutting, bending, weld-prep parts, flow drilling, tapping and sub-assembly. This allows customers to consolidate the manufacturing process and simplify their supply chain.
Laser Cutting Applications for Military & Defence
Our laser profiling services support a broad range of military and defence industry requirements, some of which include:
Armoured and Protected Vehicles
Defence Equipment and Enclosures
Structural and Chassis Components
Weapons-System Support Components
Communications and Electronic Equipment Housing
Naval and Marine Defence Equipment
Ground Support Equipment
Specialist Defence Machinery
Infrastructure and Support Systems
Waterjet Cutting for Military & Defence
Waterjet cutting offers a versatile method of cutting complex components without the introduction of heat. Using a high-powered waterjet with a suitable abrasive, this cold-cutting process achieves precise profiles, balancing cutting speed and edge quality where avoiding heat-affected zones (HAZ) is important.
With tolerances of ±0.25mm, this method suits both high-volume production requirements and wear-resistant materials, such as Hardox steel, processing sizes up to 9m x 4m and 230mm thick for demanding defence and engineering applications. Waterjet complements laser profiling, offering greater flexibility when selecting the most appropriate cutting process for each application.
